Around 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Police say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Police then located multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report early analysis indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any injuries in association with the event," they commented.
City officials stated they were working "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A senior political figure commented the incident made him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he posted on social media, referring to the death of nine people by a shooter targeting people of immigrant origin in 2020.
