Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such treatments must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
