TikTok Grants Users Power to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a new feature that allows them to cut down on the volume of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the platform revealed that it now features over 1 bn AI videos.

Trial and Implementation

The new functionality is being tested over the next few weeks before a full-scale release. This development coincides with a surge in AI content, spurred by new AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that nearly a tenth of the fastest-growing video streams on a popular video site only show AI-generated videos. A significant portion of this material is considered mass-produced AI material, a label for poor-quality, factory-style content that is typically illogical or surreal.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers like content created using AI tools, from AI artwork to educational videos, and we aim to offer the community the option to increase or decrease of that, according to their own likes,” stated a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

The service disclosed that there are currently over a billion videos on its network identified as AI-generated. Overall, over 100 mn pieces of content are submitted to the service each day, making AI content a relatively small portion of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Viewers will be able to reduce or increase the level of AI-generated videos they view by opening the topic control setting in the app and picking the AI content topic. Additional categories that currently be adjusted under the setting cover news, clothing, aesthetics, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s rules require users to tag convincing AI-generated content, and it prohibits malicious deepfakes of celebrities or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be taken down under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the app will henceforth apply an “AI-made” watermark to content made using its own AI tools, or identified by an collaborative effort for identifying AI-generated material. This step is aimed to help prevent users from seeking to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

The company is also introducing a two million dollar awareness program for specialists and organizations to create informative material about ethical AI use. This project will assist charitable organizations dedicated to educating programming and robotics.

Platform Protection

TikTok has supported its safety measures, amid discussion over intentions to lay off a large number of safety staff in the United Kingdom. TikTok is set to reduce a significant number of roles in its content moderation department in its British office, with labor groups and online safety experts voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A senior executive clarified that human moderation would remain essential, but AI can shield workers by eliminating the most harmful content prior to it is viewed by humans. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in shocking and graphic content handled by safety staff over the previous year due to intervention by its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to balance people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we additionally believe it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is proving valuable process content quickly.”
