“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
