An Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Supported Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a companion. Because my friend was considering pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the dining hall, where we got some food, sat down, and started talking to fellow residents.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I my profession was, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an research lab at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq walked over to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his full name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in multiple respects. I didn't possess the bravery or nerve to reach out at an prestigious college and request employment. Moreover, I had always wanted to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia led me to a role in Europe where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
